On this historical event the Soviet Union won the men's gold medal and the Japanese women were titled as champions in front of their home crowd. Since that time onwards, the game of volleyball in the Olympic game has continued to witness the rise and fall of great international teams. It has also seen countries as diverse as Cuba, Brazil, the Soviet Union, China, the United States, the Netherlands, Poland and Japan collecting gold medals and on the other hand conventionally volleyball playing counties are facing the failure. While power and height have become vital components of international teams, the ability of teams and coaches to devise new tactics, strategies and skills have been crucial for success at the Olympic Games.
Prior to Sydney 2000, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has started up with a new specialist role which is known as the Libero. It signifies that the the players have to wear a different colored uniform from the rest of the team and can be substituted in backcourt for any player on the team. This plyer is termed as the libero. The libero is not entitled to serve, spike the ball over the net or rotate into the front-line positions, but plays a vital role for the team in serve reception and backcourt defense.
