Like all the previous Olympic events, Table Tennis in Olympic 2008 is also going to be one of the major attractive gaming and entertaining events. The game of table tennis was introduced for the first time in the Olympic Games, Seoul in 1988. It started with cigar-box lids for rackets and a carved champagne cork for the ping pong. Today, players use highly developed rubber-coated wooden and carbon-fiber rackets and a lightweight, hollow celluloid ping pongs. The high standard table tennis rackets are made of well developed rubber compounds and glues are applied on the rackets to produce greater spin or speed when it is required.
The Table Tennis in Olympic 2008, Beijing will be held between 13th to 23th of August. Major venue for this major sporting event is selected as the Beijing University Gymnasium. There will be four events in Olympic table tennis completion:
Men's single
Women's single
Men's teams
Women's teams
Participation Criteria in Table Tennis in Olympic 2008:
An NOC may enter up to 3 men and 3 women athletes in singles events and up to 1 men's and 1 women's team in teams events. For the singles event a total number of sixty four competitors will be selected. They are mandatory to qualify in the top class table tennis competition organized in their respective nations. Finally 16 teams will qualify to perform in the main level of Beijing Olympic. The orientation of the tams will be in the following manner:
Six top team from each continent
The Host Nation in this case China will get direct entry
Nine remaining selected teams
Each team will consist of 3 players and they are not required to participate in singles events. Teams will be qualified after all singles qualification events, and they will be provided with ranking according to the January 2008 ranking list.
