Swimming in Olympic is a major sporting event and both the audience and event managers give special preference to this event. Swimming in Olympic 2008 will be held over a period of 16 days, from 9th to 21st of August. The conventional swimming events are scheduled to end on 16th of August and the 10 km marathon events of swimming for men and women respectively will be held on 20th and 21st of August. The Beijing National Aquatics Center is selected as a venue for all the swimming events except for the two marathon swimming events.

There are certain amendments made since the 2004 Olympic game. In addition to the 10 km major swimming swimming events several new swimming events have been introduced. Because of these additions the total number of events for both men and women have become 34, which makes 17 each for both the genders.
Swimming events in Olympic 2008:
Freestyle: 50 m, 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m (women), 1500 m (men), 4×100 m relay, 4×200 m relay, 10 km marathon
Butterfly: 100 m, 200 m
Backstroke: 100 m, 200 m
Medley: 200 m individual, 400 m individual, 4×100 m relay
Breaststroke: 100 m, 200 m
Qualifying Criteria for Swimming in Olympic 2008:
An NOC may enter up to 2 qualified athletes in each individual event. This can happen only when both the swimmers meet the A standard, or one athlete per event if they meet the B standard. An NOC may also enter a maximum of 1 qualified relay team per event. NOCs may enter swimmers regardless of time if they have no swimmers meeting qualifying B standard. The qualifying time standards to end up your course of swimming must be obtained in Continental Championships, National Olympic Trials or International Competitions approved by FINA which were held between the period March 15, 2007 to July 15, 2008.
