Field Hockey in Olympics 2008 in Beijing will be held over a stretch of fourteen day period which starts on August 10. The tournament of Field Hockey in Olympic 2008 will get over with the medal finals on August 23. Competition structure
Twelve teams will be competing in both the men's as well as the women's Olympic hockey tournaments. The competition of Field Hockey in Olympic 2008 will consist of two different rounds. In the first round all the teams are divided into two pools. Each pool consists of six teams, and play follows round robin league format where each of the teams plays all the other opponent teams in the pool for once. Following this, the top four teams reaches the single elimination round . This round consists of two semifinal games, and the bronze and gold medal games as well.
Eligibility Criterion of Field Hockey in Olympic 2008
The twelve teams in the Olympic hockey tournaments attain the eligibility criterion through a number of tournaments. China, as the host nation of this year's Olympic, is guaranteed one automatic entry. Five continental championships are used for determining eight or nine other qualifiers. The process, however, depends on whether China is also the Asian continental champion. Finally, three Olympic qualification tournaments will be held to determine the last three entrants for the Olympic 2008.
