Diving refers to the sport of performing acrobatics while jumping or falling into water from a platform or springboard of a certain height. An integral part of the Olympic Games, Diving is an internationally recognized sport event. Other than this, the unstructured and non-competitive diving is a common recreational pastime, specially in those places where swimming is quite popular.
Though it is not so much a popular participant sport, diving, however, is one of the more popular Olympic sports with spectators. Successful competitors has similar characteristics as gymnasts and competitive cheerleaders, which includes strength, flexibility, and air awareness as well.
There is a general perception that diving is a very dangerous activity, and this has contributed to the decline in availability of facilities. Though apparently it seems that there are some risk, the statistical incidence of injury in supervised training and competition is not alarming at all.
