Qualification Rules for Canoeing in Olympic 2008
A National Olympic Committee is eligible up to 1 boat in each slalom event at the Olympics. The qualification places are awarded to the respective National Olympic Committee, and not to the athletes. The Host Nation is awarded one boat in K-1 Men, K-1 Women and C-1 Men events and if they fail to qualify through the world championships, the lowest ranked boat from the world championships will be replaced by the boat from the Host Nation.
The International Olympic Committee caps the total number of athletes in the flat water competition, which determines the minimum boat quota places. But, an athlete may represent his National Olympic Committee even in more than one event, but in such case an additional Athlete Quota Place becomes available. The additional entry is awarded to the next best ranked National Olympic Committee at the corresponding Continental qualification. There the National Olympic Committee of the repeating athlete competes with each other.
Canoeing is the popular activity of paddling a canoe for the purpose of recreation, sport or recreatio. It is also called a float trip. Canoeing normally refers to the exclusive use of paddle to propel a canoe with only human muscle power.
